Revised 2017 Scope and Standards of Practice for RDNs and for NDTRs

Watch for the Revised 2017 Scope of Practice for the RDN, the Revised 2017 Standards of Practice (SOP) in Nutrition Care and Standards of Professional Performance (SOPP) for RDNs, the Revised 2017 Scope of Practice for the NDTR, and the Revised 2017 SOP in Nutrition Care and SOPP for NDTRs anticipated to be available in the Journal as ‘Articles in Press’ during fourth quarter of 2017, and available in print first quarter of 2018. Learn more about the Scope and Standards of Practice at www.eatrightpro.org/scope.

Scope of Practice in nutrition and dietetics encompasses the range of roles, activities, and regulations within which credentialed nutrition and dietetics practitioners perform. The SOP and SOPP reflect the education, training, responsibility, and accountability of the RDN or NDTR and depict the minimum expectation for: competent care of the patient/client/population or other customer; design and delivery of services; quality management; and professional practice outcomes.

  • The RDN documents address changes impacting practice such as:
    • CMS Conditions of Participation related to ordering privileges for: Hospitals and Critical Access Hospitals; and delegated orders in Long Term Care Facilities
    • Improving Medicare Post-Acute Care Transformation (IMPACT) Act of 2014 – includes discharge planning and transition of care
    • National efforts to address malnutrition
