BFGoodrich Tires 56th SCORE Baja 500

by Dominic Clark, SCORE Historian

One of the most recognizable and admired figures in all of Baja California, entrepreneur, racer, and race team owner, Rodrigo Ampudia Sr has agreed to be the Grand Mashal for this year’s BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 500, SCORE announced recently.

Ampudia, 66, of Ensenada, Mexico, co-founder of the popular Papas & Beer night clubs in Ensenada and Rosarito Beach, a multi-time SCORE Baja racer winner, and he is the owner and leader of Team Papas, one of the premier desert racing teams in the SCORE World Desert Championship.

“This is a unique privilege for SCORE to have an individual of Rodrigo’s stature in Baja California agree to be the Grand Marshal for this year’s BFGoodrich Tires 56th SCORE Baja 500,’ commented Jim Ryan, SCORE Vice-President of Marketing and Sales. “For 40 years, Papas & Beer has been a tradition in Ensenada and Rosarito Beach and Team Papas is one of the most respected teams in all of desert racing. We sincerely thank Rodrigo Ampudia Sr for honoring SCORE by being our Grand Marshal for this race that started the legacy of SCORE on July 26, 1974.”

Ampudia Sr has earned seven class wins in his SCORE racing career, but will quickly tell you that he is proudest of his three sons and what they continue to accomplish in desert racing.

“My brother (Rogerio) and I ran our first SCORE race in Class 1/2-1600 in 1986, and we have been a part of SCORE Baja racing ever since,” said Rodrigo Ampudia Sr. “God has blessed our family tremendously and now my three sons are the warriors of Team Papas. I am pleased to be the Grand Marshal for the SCORE Baja 500, an event that means so much to Baja California, Ensenada, and the Ampudia family.”

In his racing career, Rodrigo Ampudia Sr had three wins in the SCORE Baja 500 (1992, 1994, and 2009), one in the SCORE San Felipe 250 (2009), and three in the iconic SCORE Baja 1000 (1990, 1994, and 2017).

In his 2017 class victory, Ampudia Sr was the second driver for fellow Mexican patriarch racer Gustavo Vildosola Sr, in the SCORE TT Legend class (SCORE Trophy Truck Drivers over 50 years old), the peninsula race from Ensenada to La Paz that was part of the 50th SCORE Baja 1000 celebration.

Team Papas second generation racers will all be part of this year’s SCORE Baja 500.  Oldest brother Rodrigo Ampudia Jr, 39, will race in the Pro UTV Open class, and brothers Alan Ampudia, 33, and Aaron Ampudia, 31, will split the driving in the Team Papas SCORE Trophy Truck.

Together the three brothers won the 2019 SCORE Baja 1000 and this year Alan Ampudia drove solo to win the overall and SCORE Trophy Truck title in the King Shocks 37th SCORE San Felipe 250.

A NEW COMPLEX SHOWCASES A PASSION FOR COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY

By Dan Sanchez

After starting out in a small garage, Rugged Radios founder and president Greg Cottrell grew his radio and communication equipment business into a giant in the industry. We recently visited the company’s latest complex in Arroyo Grande, California, a small town neighboring Pismo Beach, which showcases the company’s passion for communication technology as well as vintage cars, motorcycles, race vehicles, and more.

“Our home is here in Arroyo Grande,” said Cottrell. “My dad had a motorcycle repair shop in Covina, California, and I began getting involved in it with him when he began racing in SCORE in the 70s.” Cottrell learned early on that communication is critical for safety during racing or other off-road adventures. Cottrell later moved to Arroyo Grande and began working on improving the communication systems that were available at the time, and he soon became a leader in the marketplace.

“I’ve been in the business of communication technology for 32 years and started Rugged Radios over 18 years ago,” said Cottrell. “I started out in my garage, and now we have a state-of-the-art complex designed by enthusiasts for enthusiasts.”

The Rugged Radios facility isn’t just a large, bland building in the middle of town. The beautiful exterior and interior are inviting to everyone interested in cars, motorcycles, off-road, Overlanding, and anything else on two or four wheels. “For us, it’s all about energy,” said Cottrell. “When you walk in, you feel the company– who we are– become immersed in the activity here, and you begin to realize you’re in the communications superstore.”

With more than 50 employees, the showroom is open and allows customers to see everything from order-taking, R&D, production, shipping, and more. You will also be surrounded by multiple vintage motorcycles, buggies, race vehicles, and hot-rods, all on display with the company’s products in them. From headsets for helmets to the latest GMRS communication units, samples are available for customers to pick up, feel, and ask questions.

The employees also show pride in working there, and although the main building and showroom are impressive, there’s much more to the Rugged Radios complex. Alongside the main building is the company’s new taco stand, a small building with a full kitchen that is still being prepared to make, sell, and distribute Baja-style tacos.

“The taco stand is being set up for when we have events such as car shows here at Rugged,” said Steve Gonzalez, Rugged warehouse manager. “We have events here that bring in hundreds of vehicles, and people want to eat, so we took our love of tacos from Baja and brought it to our facility.”

The Rugged complex also houses the company’s “garage,” where new products are prototyped and tested and where team members can work on their vehicles. Everything from welding tools to a CNC laser cutter is in this area to maximize creativity and design. Behind the Garage is another building where all of Cottrell’s personal toys are housed and showcased. Vintage motorcycles, Baja Bugs, Jeeps, a vintage trailer, collectible bicycles, and a replica of his dad’s motorcycle repair shop are all displayed in a tribute to the passions Cottrell shares.

Between the main building and the Garage are numerous Rugged Radio vehicles, including show support and product trailers, along with four-wheel show and pre-runner trucks.

“This year, we partnered with SCORE International as the Official Radio Communications company,” said Cottrell. “It’s been a dream of mine to become involved with SCORE in an official capacity, as we support SCORE and SCORE supports us. Most importantly, we support the racers at every event and teach them how to install, check, and recheck their equipment before a race. This partnership with SCORE is only the beginning, and I can’t wait for the many more years to come.”

Gabriel Garcia, SCORE MEDIA OPERATIONS DIRECTOR: Gabriel@SCORE-international.com AND SCORE HISTORIAN: Dominic Clark, Dominic@SCORE-International.com

ENSENADA, Baja California, Mexico—To talk about the SCORE Baja 500 is to talk about a legendary desert racing event that has attracted hundreds of thousands of adventurers from all over the world, something that will happen again this year.

The BFGoodrich Tires 56th SCORE Baja 500 in Ensenada is the second date of the 2024 SCORE World Desert Championship, starting and finishing in Ensenada on June 1 and June 2.

Interest is peaking, especially with pre-running opening on Saturday over the 483.06-mile route that includes such classic areas of the sport as The Summit, Mike's Sky Rancho, Simpson’s Ranch, the Erendira ejido and Ojos Negros.

A historic competition, which began in 1969 with a route starting and finishing in Ensenada, featured 163 competing teams, of which only 73 saw the checkered flag.

Over the years, the SCORE Baja 500 has been held in different venues, but it has always been Ensenada that has captured its charm, with 49 starting sites in that city, three in Ojos Negros, 2 in San Felipe, and only 1 in the United States, specifically, in Barstow, Calif.

COURSE PREVIEW

SCORE President/Race Director Jose A. Grijalva and SCORE Co-Race Director Rodo Fernandez, have put together another memorable race course to challenge the world’s best desert racers. The final distance is 483.06 miles.

It will be starting and finishing again on fan-friendly Blvd. Costero adjacent to the iconic Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center in the heart of Ensenada. Pre-race Contingency and Tech Inspection will also be held on Blvd. Costero on Friday, May 31 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT.

The course runs in a clockwise direction out of and back to the start/finish line compound in Ensenada, traveling through such noted areas as Ojos Negros, Tres Hermanos, El Alamo, Santa Catarina, the Summit, Cohabuzo Junction, Saldana, La Ventana access, El Arrajal wash, San Matias Pass, Mike’s Sky Rancho, Simpson’s Road to Valle de Trinidad, West to Llano Colorado, San Vicente Wash, Erendira, Santo Tomas, Uruapan, Rancho El Mezcal, Ojos Negros, and back to the finish line in Ensenada.

The course has two complete stop physical checkpoints, 240 total virtual checkpoints and 13 speed zones for a total of 40.78 miles.

Physical Checkpoint 1 is located at race mile 245.64 (near Eolic Field) and Checkpoint 2 is at rm354.71 (Llano Colorado).

Among the other infamous Baja washes that the course will go through are: El Mezcal Wash, La Rajadura Wash, El Tule Wash, Alamito Wash (before the Summit), En Medio Wash (between the Summit and Cohabuzo), San Matias Wash, Los Encinos Wash, and El Salado Wash.

All Sportsman classes, Class 11, 5/1600, Baja Challenge and Class 7SX will run a reduced course of a total of 456.91 miles.

Pre-running starts at race mile 36.95 and finishes at rm446.11. The section from rm9.30 to rm33.12 may be run outbound only on Friday, May 31.

AN EVENT OF INTERNATIONAL STATURE

Race festivities in Ensenada will be held May 29 to June 2 for the second round of the 2024 SCORE World Desert Championship.

With the nearly 260 entries expected at the start line, 194 entries to date, including racers entered to make the trip to Mexican soil from 22 U.S. States, host country Mexico, Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, Ecuador, Indonesia, Japan, New Zealand, and Peru.

In the most recent entry list of teams, the figure is 192, highlighting that the class with the most entries is SCORE Trophy Truck with 33, followed by Trophy Truck Spec with 32, Pro UTV Open (15), Pro UTV FI (14), Pro UTV Stock (12), and Class 10 (10). Among the motorcycles, the class with the most participants so far is the Pro Moto Ironman (solo riders) with 11.

MENZIES, THE KING TO BEAT

Bryce Menzies, 36, of Las Vegas, began his fabulous streak to No. 1 in SCORE Trophy Truck nearly a year ago at the 55th SCORE Baja 500 by winning the overall race in his Ford Raptor, built by Mason Motorsports.

Menzies will now try to achieve consecutive victories in the SCORE Baja 500 with navigator Oren Anderson, who has been a member of the Menzies Motorsports team for several years, knowing that everyone wants to knock them off the throne of the "Monsters of the Desert".

After his fourth place in the King Shocks 37th SCORE San Felipe 250 in March, Menzies, with a time of 4 hours, 15 minutes, 32 seconds on the 285.69 miles track, it's time to think about the podium, but also to take the checkered flag as it happened in the SCORE Baja 500 in 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2023.

SOLORZANO, LEGEND OF CLASS 11

Tijuana, Mexico native Eric Solorzano, 64, is a living legend of Off-Road and Class 11, with 7 wins in the history of the SCORE Baja 500 (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2009), all as a member of the the special class of stock VW Sedans.

Solorzano, one of two Mexicans in the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame, along with businessman Nico Saad, owner of the legendary Hotel San Nicolas in Ensenada, remains active and in this SCORE Baja 500 will join forces behind the wheel with Edwin Cherider, Manzano Adame and Leon Michel Burgoin, to try to return to the winner's circle.

EVA IS FULFILLING HER DREAM

For several years, Eva Malabanan, 16 from El Cajon, Calif., dreamed of someday racing in SCORE, so she was participating in different Off-Road organizations in the United States and Mexico, to make the leap to the "Big Leagues" of this sport.

Now Eva will be making her debut in a SCORE Baja 500, with the help of her father, Sean Malabanan, to try to bring her Polaris RZR XP1000 to the finish line in first place in the Pro UTV NA class, a mission that does not look easy, but she is ready for the big challenges.

This past March, Eva Malabanan and Daniel Gutierrez, 58, Chula Vista, Calif., finished second in the King Shocks 37th SCORE San Felipe 250, overcoming their "first test", but now the challenge is twice as extreme for her.

LET'S ALL GO TO THE BLVD. COSTERO

The colorful contingency row and tech inspection of all the participating vehicles will be held on Friday, May 31 on Ensenada's Boulevard Costero from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT, adjacent to the iconic Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center. With the Manufacturer’s Midway and multiple local vendors, the pre-race pageantry draws upwards 50,000 people for the event that is free to the public.

On Saturday, June 1, the green flag will drop on the Boulevard Costero, with the first motorcycle departing at 2:30 a.m. PT, while the first 4-wheeler will depart at 6:15 a.m. PT, having to overcome a 486-mile race course.  While the fastest vehicles are expected to finish in approximately 10 hours, all vehicles Will have a 20-hour time limit to become official finishers in the elapsed-time race.

The awards celebration will be held on Sunday, June 2 at the Cathedral Hall of the Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center at 12:30 p.m. Qualifying, contingency and the race days will be part of SCORE Live with Rat Sult on SCORE's official YouTube channel and also its official Facebook account. Tracking of the race vehicles will be available during the race through the SCORE website.

METHOD RACE WHEELS QUALIFYING

SCORE Trophy Trucks, SCORE Trophy Truck, SCORE TT Legend and Trophy Truck Spec classes will hold the Method Race Wheels Qualifying session on Thursday, May 30. Starting with at 7 a.m. PT at a private venue, this event is closed to the public.

The Method Race Wheels Qualifying will determine the starting order in those three classes for the race, as this is the first time in history that all SCORE four races will hold a qualifying session.

SCORE Live will air the Method Race Wheels Qualifying through the SCORE website.

Start order for all of the other classes in this race will be determined by a random draw for positions within each class.

ENSENADA, Baja California, Mexico (June 3, 2023)—‘Celebrating 50 Years of SCORE Desert Racing Excellence’ in 2023, Las Vegas’ super star desert racer Bryce Menzies returned to the winner’s circle June 3-in his favorite desert race, the BFGoodrich Tires 55th SCORE Baja 500 over a field of 240 starters in his Menzies Motorsports All-Wheel Drive No. 7 Ford Raptor built by Mason Motorsports.

Menzies overcame the rugged, dusty, silt-laced, rock-strewn, 473.67-mile race course over part of the Mexican State of Baja California as well as his crusty competitors in a penalty-free time of nine hours, three minutes, and 38 seconds with an average speed of 51.99 miles per hour.

Round 2 of the four-race 2023 SCORE World Desert Championship was held in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico. Ensenada, ‘The Off-Road Racing Capital of the World,’ is located 80 miles South of the U.S. Border near San Diego. Saturday was the inaugural official ‘SCORE International Day’ in Ensenada.

With 240 starters from 26 U.S. States and 11 countries, 45 competition classes were offered for Pro and Sportsman cars, trucks, UTVs, motorcycles and quads.

PODIUM FINISHERS

Lining up behind the masterful Menzies on the overall podium for this year’s race were Mike Walser, 56, Comfort, Texas with a penalty-free time of 9:13:22 as alternate driver for Dallas Luttrell, Las Vegas in the No. 87 Mason-built Chevy Silverado also in SCORE Trophy Truck while finishing an amazing overall third overall and capturing his Trophy Truck Spec class in the highest overall finish in SCORE history in his class was Jason McNeil, 45, El Cajon, Calif., with a corrected time of 9:33:37.

MENZIES MASTERY

Starting in third position after SCORE San Felipe 250 winner Luke McMillin and hometown favorite Alan Ampudia.

Menzies passed Ampudia who was having issues that eventually put him out of the race, then gradually worked his way around defending SCORE Overall and SCORE Trophy Truck point champion ‘The Luke’ McMillin.

After pushing his truck to catch up with McMillin who appeared to be slowing down, Menzies got by McMillin and had clean air as he ‘cruised’ through the bombastic Baja terrain to earn his ninth career SCORE Trophy race win and his fourth overall and SCORE Trophy Truck victory in the SCORE Baja 500.

While Ampudia had an unfortunate DNF in the race, ‘The Luke’ battled back after down time dropped him out of the top 10 and ending finishing sixth overall and fourth in the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck.

MENZIES NUMBERS

Menzies, 35, first won in the SCORE Baja 500 during his rookie SCORE racing season in 2011, following that up with victories in 2012 and 2014 before his fourth race win in 2023.

Menzies ninth career SCORE Trophy Truck race victory ties him with the legendary Ivan ‘Ironman’ Stewart and the team of David Ashley/Dan Smith in sixth place on the all-time SCORE Trophy Truck race win list. SCORE Trophy Truck is the marquee racing division for high-tech, 1000-horsepower custom trucks.

MORE DIRT TRAX

The 240 total entries included racers representing 26 U.S. States, U.S. Territory Puerto Rico, and 11 countries. The countries with at least one racer so far are United States, host country Mexico, Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Finland, Japan, New Zealand, and Peru.

The rugged race course closed in the elapsed-time race early Sunday morning. Following complete data tracking review, later Sunday morning the results were made official by SCORE President/Race Director Jose A. Grijalva.

Of the 240 starters, there were 175 official finishers for a finishing rate on the technically challenging course of a superlative 72.92 percent. The percentage of finishers is a clear example of the tenacity of the racer to make it to the finish line in the grueling challenge as well as a tribute to the remarkable improvement of the vehicles over the years.

The 175 finishers are the 10th-most in the storied history of this iconic race.

MENZIES’ MEMO

Obviously elated with his journey bouncing around beautiful Baja, Menzies commented in post-race interview before literally hundreds of adoring SCORE Baja racing fans, “The race started out pretty good and then I earned myself a flat. It set ourselves back a little and then we had to put a little charge on, which was fun at the beginning. We caught back up to Alan (Ampudia, No. 10) and he had an issue, he was pulled over, and Luke (McMillin, No. 1) was about two and a half minutes ahead, so I knew I had a long way to catch him. I ran up in his dust up and over the Summit (race mile 100) and then he started to slow down a little bit, I think he had an issue. When I went to go around him, I clipped a rock and bent my steering, so it was off all day.”

“Once we got by him, we were very confident and we just put on a good charge and once we got Borrego (race mile 210) we heard we were about ten minutes ahead of everyone else, so I backed it off quite a bit going through San Felipe (race mile 240) because it was brutal there. When we got to Valle de la Trinidad (race mile 280) and made it to beach, it was super smooth. I took my eye off the ball for a second and clipped a massive rock. I thought I had broken something on the right rear, but fortunately it was just a rim and a tire. We got that back on and just cruised to the finish.”

“The coast section on the race course, I hadn’t done it since 2015, and it was one of the coolest sections in my life. We had some close calls here and there, but overall, it was an awesome day. Coming to the finish to win my fourth SCORE Baja 500 was really special. I was looking for redemption and I redeemed myself today. The SCORE Baja 500 is my favorite race.”

SALAS JR AGAIN

Winning the overall motorcycle for the second straight year and the first time as rider of record of his own race team was Arturo Salas Jr, 20, Chula Vista, Calif. (Tecate, Mexico) with another young gun Clayton Roberts, 21, Hesperia, Calif.  The talented new duo covered the blistering course in a penalty-free 10:29:59, averaging 45.11 miles per hour on their hard-charging KTM 450XCF.

In one of the most competitive motorcycle battles in recent SCORE history, Salas Jr battled three other teams for the majority of the race, exchanging leads physically several times.

Another young gun racing for the first time in a SCORE race as ROR, finishing second was second-generation desert racer Connor Eddy, 17, Barstow, Calif., in a time of 10:38:13 on his Honda CRF450X.

Third place among the motorcycle competitors Ciaran Naran, 23, Huntington Beach, Calif., who won this year’s SCORE San Felipe 250. In this race he and his four-rider team finished 10:41:38.

Last year, Salas Jr was on the winning motorcycle team led by Bolivia’ Juan Carlos Salvatierra. Salvatierra and his five-rider team finished fourth on corrected time this year in 10:47:51 on his KTM 450SX-F.

MOTO CHAMPS REMARKS

In his first SCORE race as the rider of record with his own team, an emotional Salas Jr, expressed at the finish line, “It was a very good race. It took us a lot of time and effort to make it possible and this would never have been such a good race without the support of our incredible team and our amazing families. The race was awesome, full of competition.”

“We battled the 9x (Connor Eddy), 3x (Ciaran Naran) and 1x (Juan Carlos Salvatierra) until the very last mile and I want to give them props for a great race and for keeping it fun. We had a perfect bike the entire race, I bet it could still run another 500 miles if we had to. I have no complaints at all and am very happy about how it turned out.”

Another happy racer, Salas’ co-rider Clayton Roberts said at the finish, “It was a great day. Arturo and I did this race with just the two of us, so it was a lot of miles today. We rode hard, rode strong and it definitely felt good on the bike. Everything went as planned and it was a great day overall. We didn’t have any issues with the bike and we burned up that last tire pretty good, so we finished with not much of a real tire left, but it held strong for at least 300 miles.”

OVERALL TOTALS

SCORE Trophy Trucks have now won 26 overalls in the SCORE Baja 500 in the 30 years that the premier racing class has been part of this race. In this year’s race, SCORE Trophy Trucks captured the five of top 10 overall finishing positions.

KTM earned its second overall motorcycle win and second straight in this race.

Among the tire manufacturers, Toyo Tires has now won their fifth overall victory.

In the overall pro 4wheel vehicles, Ford has now earned 15 Overall wins and in overall engine wins, Ford now has 17 wins.

Besides Menzies, Wasler, McNeil and Luke McMillin, the top 10 overall finishers in the race included three more racers from SCORE Trophy Truck, three more from Trophy Truck Spec and one from SCORE TT Legend.

Fourth overall and an impressive third in SCORE Trophy Truck was ageless warrior Larry ‘Mr. Baja’ Roeseler, 66, Imperial, Calif., with a time of 9:38:16 in his Baja Jerky No. 43 Toyota Tundra while fifth overall and second in Trophy Truck Spec as the alternative driver for EJ Herbst was Ryan Millen, 37, Huntington Beach, Calif.      Eighth overall and third in Trophy Truck Spec was Ryan Hancock, 47, Yuma, Ariz., in the No. 228 TSCO-Chevy with a finishing time of 9:52:48.

Gustavo Vildosola Sr, 69, Mexicali, Mexico, was ninth overall and won his SCORE TT Legend class for SCORE Trophy Truck drivers over 50 years old in his No. 1L Vildosola Racing Ford Raptor. His second driver was AMA Hall of Famer Ricky Johnson, 58, El Cajon, Calif.

Completing the top 10 Overall finishers and fourth in Trophy Truck Spec were Las Vegas brothers Thor Herbst, 23 and Pierce Herbst, 20, in their No. 219 Herbst/Smith-Chevy.

DOUBLE-TIME

Mexico’s popular businessman Oliver Flemate, of Ensenada, succeeded in finishing in two of three classes that he entered including one class victory.

Flemate, who won Class 11 at the season-opener in San Felipe, entered Trophy Truck Spec, SCORE Lite, and Class 11. He had second thoughts after all of his pre-running of the race course and had Patricio Flores, 42, Ensenada, Mexico, drive his SCORE Lite vehicle which finished second in that class.

Flemate finished 12th out of 31 starters driving solo in Trophy Truck Spec in his No. 244 TSCO-Chevy. He then went back and finished in Class 11 and won Class 11 again in 2023 in his No. 1105 Stock VW Sedan.

BODACIOUS BAJA

SCORE President/Race Director Jose A. Grijalva put together another memorable race course to challenge the world’s best desert racers.

It started and finished again on fan-friendly Blvd. Costero adjacent to the iconic Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center in the heart of Ensenada.

The course ran in a clockwise direction out of and back to the start/finish line compound in Ensenada, traveling through such noted areas as Ojos Negros, Santa Catarina, the Summit, Cohabuzo Junction, Saldana, La Ventana access, Las Cuevitas Wash, San Matias Pass, Valle de Trinidad, Llano Colorado, Cerro Solo, San Vicente Wash, Erendira, Santo Tomas, Uruapan, Los Encinitos, Rancho El Mezcal and Ojos Negros.

The course had two complete stop physical checkpoints, 188 total virtual checkpoints and 13 speed zones for a total of 58.27 miles.

All Sportsman classes, Class 11 and Class 7SX a reduced course of a total of 440.72 miles.

This was the first time since the 2016 SCORE Baja 1000 that a SCORE race course has gone over the Summit (around race mile 108.23) and was the first time since the 2019 SCORE Baja 1000 that the course went through Ejido Nativos between Erendira and Santo Tomas.
