Research in Germany

Germany is a top destination for PhD students, postdocs, and senior scientists. The website "Research in Germany" helps you to find your way to Germany, to seek for PhD positions, research jobs or funding opportunities. It describes the German research landscape and helps you plan your career and life in Germany. Welcome to Germany - the Land of Ideas!

Why Germany

There are many good reasons for doing research in  Germany. It is one of the most innovative, stable and well endowed  research nations  and its universities and research institutions are among the best in the world. Values like freedom and diversity as well as social and ecological responsibility are considered important to ensure knowledge gain and societal progress.

Low-intensity grazing is locally better for biodiversity but challenging for land users, a new study shows

A team of researchers led by the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv), Leipzig University, and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) has investigated the motivation and potential incentives for and challenges of low-intensity grazing among farmers and land users in Europe. The interview results have been published in Land Use Policy.

Protein responsible for genetic inflammatory disease identified

Scientists at the University of Cologne discover that the linear ubiquitin assembly complex (LUBAC) is essential for proper immune response and demonstrate the potential of targeted therapeutic interventions in managing immune dysregulation / publication in ‘Nature Immunology’

New insights into our immune system - Bcl6 important for the formation of certain dendritic cells

Dendritic cells play an important role in setting the course of our immune system. However, what determines their heterogeneity and functional specialization is still not sufficiently understood. An international collaboration consisting of researchers from the University Hospital Bonn (UKB), the University of Bonn and the Technical University of Denmark, among others, has investigated the role of the transcription factor Bcl6 in dendritic cells in a mouse model and discovered that a subgroup is highly dependent on this protein.

Bayreuth scientists are working on the secure data exchange for the energy transition

Together with partners, Bayreuth business IT specialists have developed a secure way of exchanging data in the energy system for the German Energy Agency (dena). The report “Fundamentals and significance of data spaces for the energy industry” was published on April 25. The authors are Prof. Dr. Jens Strüker and Dr. Marc-Fabian Körner from the University of Bayreuth.

Tracking the dynamics of biomolecules with optofluidic antennas

In order to better understand fundamental processes in life science at the molecular level, the precise observation of single molecule dynamics is of utmost interest. However, current techniques based on fluorescence measurements in aqueous solutions are unable to track changes in molecular structure with sufficient temporal resolution. Physicists at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light (MPL) have now succeeded in further developing a photonic structure known from quantum optics – the planar optical antenna – for use in aqueous media to monitor dynamic processes. This enables conformational changes of individual biomolecules to be observed with the highest temporal resolution.
