What it Takes to Automate Operations at Scale
Tuesday, October 12, 2021: 3:00 PM - 4:15 PM EDT
DescriptionIn this operations workshop triple-header, moderated by Shane Portfolio, Senior VP of Field Operations Engineering for Comcast, representatives from Cox, Comcast and Versant Solutions Group discuss what it takes to achieve massive operational scale. Richard Brown, a Data Science Lead at Cox, kicks things off with a deep dive into historical and post-COVID traffic consumption patterns, by application and time, as factors that can be fed into an automated network planning tool to inform both strategic growth goals and business continuity operations. Next, Comcast’s Betsy Riley-Wasserman details what it takes to achieve unity through scale, after the “easy” aspects of geographic consolidation are complete, and what’s left are the harder tasks, like unifying tools, processes, and standards; attendees will learn how to think through the major pillars of such a plan, which include planning, design, capacity, network, tools, systems integration, and reliability engineering. Lastly, Versant Solutions Group's Ian Oliver presents findings and insights from the company’s application of automated design and optimization (ADO) technology to its access network strategy and planning activities – including details about a unique situation in which Mediacom entered into a competitive bidding process to serve a mid-size US city with symmetrical Gigabit service and, using ADO technology, was able to quickly and confidently evaluate multiple N+x network architectures in terms of technical feasibility and capital cost.
