  • Agreement with Mara Technologies calls for production of GigaXtend HFC amplifiers to commence in 2023

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 13, 2022 – ATX Networks, a global leader in broadband access and media distribution solutions, has entered an agreement with Mara Technologies, a subsidiary of the Invotek Group, to establish a USA-based factory to build GigaXtend HFC amplifiers and future ATX products.

The Michigan-based, state-of-the-art facility, scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2023, adds incremental manufacturing capacity for ATX to meet increasing demands for cable plant upgrades, shortens delivery times for products in the North American market with a new manufacturing location in the USA, and derisks supply chain challenges. The new facility will augment what has been a strong contract manufacturing arrangement in Asia and gives ATX the capability to massively scale and support an expected increase in future product introductions.

“As we all learned over the past few years, supply chain diversification is critical for both scale and risk mitigation,” said Kevin Rossi, General Manager of Access Networks at ATX. “Our customers have been asking us to diversify to ensure their mission-critical networking needs can be met. We’re seeing historic demand for HFC amplifiers, and with the evolution to 1.8GHz amplifiers on the near horizon, having an ability to flex and scale will be crucial to our success.”

The factory, which will be operated by Invotek Group, a manufacturing facilities provider based in Ontario, Canada, will initially produce 1.2GHz amplifiers. ATX anticipates that the new facility will also handle the production of the company’s family of 1.8GHz amplifiers, which is scheduled for commercial availability in 2023.

ATX is a leading provider of HFC amplifiers, as well as 2GHz-capable taps and passives for cable operators’ outside plants. The company became the only authorized supplier of legacy GainMaker® amplifiers after licensing the technology from Cisco® in 2020. ATX introduced the GainMaker-compatible GigaXtend GMC family of 1.2GHz Line Extenders and Systems Amplifiers later that year. All GigaXtend 1.2GHz amplifiers, as well as most of the installed base of GainMaker amps, are DOCSIS® 4.0-ready and seamlessly upgradeable to GigaXtend 1.8GHz amplifiers.

“We couldn’t be more excited to be working on this ambitious project with ATX, which will be the anchor tenant of our new USA-based facility,” said Peter Schmied, President & COO of the Invotek Group of companies. “By all indications, the demand for next-generation HFC amplifiers will be staggering over the next few years and we are proud to be part of ATX’s efforts to get this equipment into the hands of cable operators as quickly, reliably and cost-efficiently as possible.”

ATX will be showcasing its portfolio of 1.2GHz and 1.8GHz HFC amplifiers at the 2022 SCTE Cable-Tec Expo, which begins on September 19th in Philadelphia. The ATX booth (#9019) will also feature demonstrations of the company’s 2GHz taps and passives, 10G digital optical transport equipment and media distribution solutions.

  • Product introduction coincides with first order of 1.8GHz amplifiers placed by major North American cable operator

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 13, 2022 – ATX Networks, a global leader in broadband access and media distribution solutions, will debut the GigaXtend GMC 1.8GHz family of next-generation HFC amplifiers at next week’s SCTE tradeshow and exhibition.

Visitors to ATX’s booth (9019) will have the opportunity for a hands-on, up-close look at the company’s line-up of next-generation amps, which includes the GigaXtend GMC 1.8GHz Line ExtenderGigaXtend GMC 1.8GHz High Gain Dual (HGD) System AmplifierGigaXtend GMC 1.8GHz High Gain Balanced Triple (HGBT) System Amplifier and the GigaXtend GMC 1.8GHz Booster Amplifier.

“The unveiling of our 1.8GHz HFC amp portfolio has been a work in progress since we introduced the GigaXtend GMC family of 1.2GHz outside plant actives, the only authorized successor to the venerable GainMaker® product line, in 2020,” said Mike Whitley, Vice President of Access Network Products at ATX. “This important milestone is a culmination of all the work that went into the success of that product introduction, along with months of close collaboration with customers, component suppliers and standards bodies, to ensure that the transition to 1.8GHz and DOCSIS® 4.0 is as seamless and cost-efficient as possible.”

Backward compatible with much of the installed base of GainMaker actives, ATX’s GigaXtend GMC amplifiers reduce costs and operational complexing by eliminating the need to retrain technicians or installers, redesign cabinets containing current amps or conduct extensive testing or verification that’s often required with the introduction of new equipment into the network.

In addition to extending spectrum to 1.8GHz, ATX’s new family of DOCSIS 4.0-compatible HFC amplifiers delivers new levels of intelligence and time-saving enhancements, such as all-electronic level and slope controls, auto-alignment and improved level-stability control. ATX designed the new 1.8GHz amplifiers to drop into existing GainMaker and GigaXtend footprints, enabling MSOs to maintain existing spacing and minimize the need to relocate or add new amplifiers to the existing plant.

A large North American MSO placed an order for GigaXtend GMC 1.8GHz Line Extenders and Systems Amplifiers earlier this month in preparation for the migration of its HFC network to DOCSIS 4.0. Several other Tier-1 MSOs have also indicated intentions to begin deploying 1.8GHz amplifier in 2023.

Increased customer demand and competitive threats from fiber-based service providers have put pressure on cable operators to extend the speed and capacity of their HFC networks. ATX’s GigaXtend GMC amplifiers assist MSOs in evolving their outside plants seamlessly and in lockstep with customer demand and competitive threats. GigaXtend 1.2GHz amps, which enable cable operators to maximize the capabilities of DOCSIS 3.1 through mid- and high- band splits, are seamlessly upgradable to the DOCSIS 4.0 compatible GigaXtend family of 1.8GHz amplifiers. Extending spectrum to 1.8GHz will empower MSOs to deliver multigigabit symmetrical broadband services.

GigaXtend GMC 1.8GHz amplifiers’ modular design allow MSOs to upgrade their outside plant through module upgrades or entire station replacements. GigaXtend 1.8GHz Line Extenders and System Amplifiers are available in the original GainMaker housing. System Amplifiers are also available in a new, wider housing that offers increased thermal dissipation, allowing for future enhancements. Both housings enable technicians to replace entire system amps without the need for extension fittings.

“The HFC network is the highest-performing and most agile broadband network in the world,” added Whitley. “Our new family of 1.8GHz amplifiers provides cable operators with a critical and timely solution for taking their outside plants, as well as their businesses, to the next level.”

In a separate announcement, ATX unveiled an agreement to add USA-based contract manufacturing of its GigaXtend HFC amplifiers in 2023.

Additional solutions from ATX’s access network portfolio, including GigaXtend 2GHz taps and passives and the GigaWave Digital Optical Transport solution, will also be showcased at Cable-Tec Expo 2022. Show attendees will also get a close-up look at the company’s Visium Commercial Services GatewaysVisium Set-Back Box security adapter and ATX’s DVIS II next-generation local channel insertion solution.

  • IP-based successor to company’s venerable DVIS platform significantly reduces MSOs’ operational burden

TORONTO, Sept. 7, 2022 – ATX Networks, a global leader in broadband access and media distribution solutions, will be debuting DVIS II, the company’s next-generation, IP-based local channel insertion platform, at this month’s SCTE Cable-Tec Expo.

The new solution enables MSOs to assist bulk accounts, such as Multi-Dwelling Units (MDUs), apartment buildings, retirement facilities and enterprise customers, in adding lobby feeds and other locally generated content into television channel lineups. DVIS II supports both QAM- and IP-based environments, offers unrivaled deployment flexibility and significantly reduces operational overhead for MSOs and other service providers.

“ATX designed DVIS II to make it as convenient and cost-efficient as possible for MSOs converting their services to IP while continuing to provide their bulk video customers with the ability to view local content, such as information channels and other live local content, alongside traditional television programming lineups,” said Andrew Isherwood, General Manager and CTO of Media Distribution at ATX. “Our newest channel insertion system provides cable operators with a choice of operational models, ranging from productizing some or all elements of the solution internally, or leveraging ATX to provide the solution as a managed and hosted service.”

The DVIS II platform consists of a low-cost, premises-located edge encoder paired with ATX’s Enhanced Origin Server, a low-latency software engine hosted within an MSO datacenter, the public cloud or even on the premises of large enterprise customers with local area networks. ATX’s Enhanced Origin Server also features customizable authentication and authorization functionality to ensure that only end clients associated with the appropriate accounts receive the local content.

DVIS II is the successor to the original DVIS platform, a widely deployed local insertion solution that played an instrumental role in assisting MSOs in enabling locally generated content to be viewed by subscribers with QAM-based set-top boxes (STBs) as cable operators converted their television services from analog to digital. The ongoing migration from QAM-based video services to IP has similarly created a demand for insertion solutions that can convert baseband signals from cameras and other sources into channels that can be consumed by IP-based STBs.

“Our new local channel insertion solution, at its core, is extending the functionality of the legacy DVIS platform, which is installed in thousands of MDUs and commercial properties,” added Isherwood. “This time around, though, we’ve streamlined the overall operation and made it even more cost-efficient and convenient for service providers to deliver this still-relevant service to their bulk video customers.”

In addition to also supporting QAM-based output, which allows service providers to simultaneously support local insertion at properties with a mix of QAM and IP endpoints, DVIS II is managed by ATX’s Visium Manager, an all-purpose element management system that can control Visium MD multimedia gateways and the Visium Set-Back Box (SBB) security adapter, significantly simplifying the installation, monitoring and maintenance of potentially thousands of DVIS II encoders.

ATX will showcase DVIS II at SCTE Cable-Tec Expo 2022, the cable industry’s premier conference and tradeshow held in Philadelphia, PA, September 19-22. Please visit ATX’s booth (9019) for more information about DVIS II, as well as other solutions in the company’s media distribution portfolio.
