Traditionally, we have monitored the upstream from the burst receiver, but because we have smarter amplifiers and new protocols, we can now measure it within the cascade. Comcast’s Larry Wolcott will provide a comprehensive analysis of the Proactive Network Maintenance (PNM) Upstream Data Analyzer (UDA), which uses the DOCSIS™ spectrum analyzers embedded in cable modems to sample the upstream frequency spectrum near the points of ingress, rather than at the receiver. After nearly a decade in development, UDA is ready for deployment and enables quick identification of individual premises and drop cables contributing to upstream noise, potentially resulting in significant operational efficiency improvements in network maintenance.

Allen Maharaj with Rogers Communications delves into Upstream Triggered Spectrum Capture (UTSC), the game-changing protocol allowing operators to remotely capture and analyze upstream spectrum data to be used not just as a real-time diagnostic tool but a more effective automated triggered capture and analysis function for troubleshooting intermittent problems.

Steve Condra of Teleste Intercept LLC, in collaboration with Norlys, a leading Danish cable operator, will provide an insightful case study tackling upstream ingress and control point discovery (CPD) issues in high-split cable networks. Norlys was one of the first operators in the world to perform massive high-split upgrades across their entire cable network infrastructure in parallel with distributed access roll-out in Denmark.
