Description

Join us at the focused look into 5G mobile offload for cable operators and more generally, how DOCSIS can be leveraged for 5G networks. Vik Saxena from Charter will guide us through the discussion about hybrid small cell and macro radio designs, where presenters delve into relevant design processes and architecture.

Cable operators offering mobile phone services are some of the fastest growing mobile service providers in the United States. Samsung has partnered with cable industry veteran Enersys to build a 5G small cell radio to be deployed directly on the HFC strand, which resolves many challenges. Cameron Gillis from Samsung will discuss the benefits and challenges of deploying 5G small cells on the HFC strand network, as well as present the functional components of a strand mounted small cell radio and wireless engineering parameters to be considered when designing a 5G wireless network using this type of cell radio.

The cable industry has a unique lens through which it looks at vRAN and O-RAN technologies. For example, while the virtualization, multi-vendor interoperability, and hyper-specialization of RAN functions are exciting, the operators are also interested in 5G RAN architectures and technologies capable of leveraging its HFC assets. Praveen Srivastava of Charter will review the requirements and suggest an implementable split RAN architecture in HFC access networks, as well as qualitatively assess the potential role of DOCSIS technologies in enabling split RAN architectures.

DOCSIS can play a key role in enabling disaggregated deployments but still maintaining key performance metrics. Ramneek Bali from Charter presents real-world results using commercial solutions for integrating Virtual Radio Access network (V-RAN) F1 over DOCSIS.
